Peter and Katherine Orange

Peter and Katherine Orange recently returned to New Zealand after 34 years in Asia, and chose Golden Bay especially for its climate and natural beauty. They had nurtured an interest in wine for many years and recognised that the region was potentially well suited to the production of wine and of sparkling wine in particular.

In fact one of the first vineyards in NZ to operate commercially and to export wine to Australia during the latter part of the 19th and early part of 20th century was located only about 3km from the current Golden Bay Wines vineyard.

After a planting and a development period, the first vintage harvest specifically for methode traditionelle sparkling wine was in 2001, and this was introduced into the market in late 2005, followed by the 2003 vintage in late 2007. Peter and Katherine have come to realise that Golden Bay has a bright future not only as a tourist holiday destination and art centre but also as a distinctive region in its own right for production of high quality and distinctive still and sparkling wines. It is their aim to have the names Golden Bay and Petros associated immediately with high quality sparkling wines.

Golden Bay Wines is one of five vineyards / wineries currently operating in Golden Bay.
